This all started with a new hairstyle rocked by actress Zendaya Coleman at the Oscars this year.
On the iconic E! show ‘Fashion Police’, where celebrities can get away just being generally snarky and rude about other celebrities and no one seems to care, Giuliana Rancic made a comment about Zendaya’s new hair, but the internet wasn’t having any of it.
“I feel like she smells like patchouli oil … or weed.” says Giuliana. Cue internet wide outrage, including a direct comment from Zendaya herself when she said:
“There is a fine line between what is funny and disrespectful. Someone said something about my hair at the Oscars that left me in awe. Not because I was relishing in rave outfit reviews, but because I was hit with ignorant slurs and pure disrespect. To say that an 18 year old young woman with locs must smell of patchouli oil or “weed” is not only a large stereotype but outrageously offensive. “
She proceeded to list accomplished scholars, actresses, singers, and authors who all wear the hairstyle and suggested the co-host educate herself before “opening your mouth”. You go girl.
Guiliana has since issued her apology, and boy is it one heck of an apology. Celebrity apologies often go along the lines of ‘I’m sorry you felt offended’ instead of actually taking responsibility and producing a genuine heartfelt apology. Rancic’s apology, however, has hit the nail on the head and the majority of the internet feels appeased.
