The usual grumbles about traffic jams could be heard on the M62 this morning, but the drivers in despair will have been surprised to find out what the problem was.

Somewhere  in the region of 600 chickens in crates were flung across the lanes during an accident near Eccles interchange in the early hours. Some of the chickens are rumored to have escaped and can be now seen wandering around the motorway.

The eastbound carriageway has been shut between junction 11 (Birchwood) and junction 12 (M60 Eccles Interchange) since 4.15am, according to the Manchester Evening News, and Emergency services are said to still be working to catch all the little pluckers.
