Get ready to spend more time pondering on what you’d do / who you’d kill if the purge were actually a real thing, as it has been revealed they plan on stretching the series to a fourth movie.
Universal Pictures, Blumhouse and Platinum Dunes are combining their movie-making dark magic once more to produce another entry in the dystopian horror franchise, and have set a release date of July 4, 2018.
Franchise creator James DeMonaco, who wrote and directed the previous three Purge films, is set write the upcoming sequel, but has relinquished his seat in the director’s chair this time. Instead, he will reportedly help the film’s producers find another director to create the fourth installment.
Warning, possible spoilers ahead.
If you’ve seen all of the movies (brave) you’ll know that in the third movie, purge night is abolished – so this fourth movie is said to be prequel that looks back to the time the New Founding Fathers of America came to power.
James DeMonado told CinemaBlend:
“I would actually go back and I would try to talk about how it all started. That seems the natural next chapter in this, is to say, ‘Alright, we’ve done this trilogy. We see how it got to this point of someone trying to end it – this presidential figure. Now let’s go back and see how the fuck all this came about.’
How did this country get to a place where we were now accepting this kind of atrocity, this terrible thing, each year? I think there’s something interesting in that. I don’t think I’ll direct, between you and I. You can print that, I mean.
I’m thinking of maybe writing or at least producing it, to make sure it stays true to what I like about the movies.”
The Purge series has proven to be a profitable one, with the entire series raking in about $315 million worldwide. If this fourth movie is also a hit, we may be seeing more and more movies about a night in which all crime is legal.
