Believe it or not, Gabi Finalyson, a student at a school in Utah, was sent home last weekend for wearing this elegant dress. They deemed it “inappropriate.” Gabi bought the bead and lace dress in Paris on a trip with her family because it reminded her of her idol, Audrey Hepburn. She even went as far as getting the dress altered to make sure it was covering everything. The straps met the “2-inch minimum strap” requirement, her back was not exposed, but when she arrived at the prom, she was asked to wear her winter coat for the duration of the night.
The reason it was deemed inappropriate is the shoulders. Does this mean that every kid in school has a shoulder fetish? Let’s be fair here, 15-year-old boys are probably going to want to chase the girls around even if they came mummified in barbed wire, that’s what puberty does to a boy. But these boys aren’t going to turn into savages and completely lose their cool at the sight of a pair of shoulders. Much more likely is that they will dance awkwardly, feel incredibly insecure and shy, and then go home wishing they had plucked up the courage to speak to the girl they fancied.
Gabi gave MTV her own solution to the problem. “Maybe instead of teaching girls that they should cover themselves up, we should be teaching boys that we’re not sex objects that they can look at.”
