We wish that we were making this up, but if you pop on down to Sheffield Crown Court this week you will indeed see the man accused of having sex with a Shetland pony.
When police discovered Alan Barnfield, 44, at around midnight one evening last August he was ‘sweating profusely and smelling strongly of horses.’ Local residents had originally called the cops after spotting Barnfield put something around the neck of the Shetland pony before leading it and another horse into a dark wooded area.
Prosecutor Louise Reevell said: ‘It is at this time the prosecution say that intercourse took place out of sight in a dark wooded area at the end of the paddock.
When they searched his rucksack, looking for items he might use to commit theft, they found several cans of Lynx deodorant, a length of white electrical cable, a handheld water sprayer, a cloth, a metal dog chain and two bottles of Lucozade. Certainly not your average packed lunch now is it.
Owner Jodie Walton discovered one of the horses, called Sky, in discomfort the day after the alleged sexual assault at Oak Tree Stables in Doncaster. She called a vet who carried out an examination.
The court heard that DNA from Sky was found on a sample taken from Barnfield. Furthermore, he had bestiality images and films stored on his mobile.
Barnfield’s version of events are somewhat different, he is claiming that he was just out having a walk….
With stolen horses…
In the woods…
The trial continues.
