With Christmas shopping well and truly in full swing, we wanted to remind you of this extraordinary story that happened a year ago.
As the stereotype goes, men hate shopping with their girlfriends, but this story takes things to a whole new level. Tao Hsiao, 38, jumped to his death in the middle of a multistory shopping center after his girlfriend insisted they go into another store.
It all happened at the Golden Eagle International Shopping Center in Xuzhou, Jiangsu, a province in east China. Closed-circuit television footage shows Hsiao accompanying his girlfriend around the mall and carrying her numerous shopping bags along the way. Witnesses claimed that after five hours he’d had enough and demanded they go home. His girlfriend, however, wanted to hit one last shop where a shoe sale was taking place. That’s when it all escalated.
“He told her she already had enough shoes, more shoes than she could wear in a lifetime and it was pointless buying any more,She started shouting at him, accusing him of being a skinflint and of spoiling Christmas, it was a really heated argument.”
The two began shouting at one another until Hsiao threw the bags onto the floor and jumped over the balcony. He smashed into holiday decorations on the way down until he hit the ground seven floors below. Shoppers were startled by the noise and fled in panic, but miraculously no one else was hurt in the incident.
Emergency services were called, but he was pronounced dead on the spot.
