An Indian student dragged her sexual assailant to the local police station after nearby observers failed to help her out during the daylight attack.
Pradna Mandhare was boarding a train in Mumbai at around 2:30pm when the man, known only as Chavan, attacked her.
The 20-year-old believes that around 50 people were stood watching as the “visibly drunk” man approached and started touching her inappropriately.
“When I tried to avoid him, he grabbed me,” she told Indian news channel NDTV. “I was shocked for a couple of seconds, but then I started hitting him with my bag.”
“People stopped to stare, but no one bothered to even ask what was going on.”
“Since the man was filthy, I found it difficult to even touch him. I caught him by his hair and dragged him to the Government Railway Police (GRP) chowkie,”
She later said that as she was dragging him to the station, unaided, she feared he may attack her again. Thankfully she got Chavan to the police station and he was arrested.
This is the latest incident in an ongoing struggle with gender based violence in India. More woman are speaking out than ever and Pradna is encouraging those that aren’t to join them.
“Every woman should fought back in such cases and they should not keep quiet”
Well done Pradna for her bravery.
